Cork Tiles vs. Children and Pets

When I told a friend that my husband and I were installing cork floor tiles in the kitchen and family room, she promptly laughed and informed me that they would never survive my children and two dogs. To drive home her point, she then drew her fingernails across the corkboard hanging in the kitchen, leaving five long scratch marks. Instead of giving up, I decided to do further research on the durability of cork.

First of all, the unique properties of cork come from its natural the structure as well its chemical composition. Cork has a honeycomb structure, which contains millions of air pockets. Every centimeter of cork contains approximately 30 and 40 million air cells that act as tiny shock absorbers. They also provide insulation, resiliency, impermeability, durability and act as a fire retardant. In addition, cork is as hypoallergenic. This is especially important if your children suffer from asthma, or another respiratory ailment.

Unlike other flooring coverings, cork is perfect for children. Because of its resiliency, it gives and flexes providing children with a firm but giving play surface, unlike hardwood or ceramic or stone floors. Many of you are probably now thinking, what about carpet. Carpet is a soft and giving surface however it is not hypoallergenic and can trap dust mites, as well as dirt and pollen particles. Cork doesn't trap dust and therefore does not cause allergies. In addition, though cork can catch fire and will burn, it does not give off toxic fumes and is considered to be flame resistant, making it again safer to install in a child's play room or bedroom than carpet. From what I discovered, whether installing cork in a child's room, family room, or kitchen, cork is by far the better choice. It is durable, tough, and resilient. In fact, I discovered that cork floors are often used in public buildings such as schools, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, shops, and offices.

When I showed my friend how perfect cork was, she scheduled an appointment to have cork installed in her home as well.
